I love this restaurant…. it’s one of many faves in the York Region. It used to be located on East Beaver Creek where it is, what I call, restaurant heaven. Then they suddenly closed. I think this happened because it was just too large a space to keep full, thus being unable to sustain itself over the long haul. At this point I had to revert to their Scarborough location on Sheppard Ave. East at Brimley Road (next to Harvey’s), not exactly close but well worth the drive… besides, I could drop in on Mom and take her with me 🙂

Then one day, located right down the street, the newest strip mall was adding more stores and low and behold, Vic Hong was one of them.

Now less than half the size of the original, operated by what appears to be mostly women, seating around fifty at a time, they became my neighbour…. I can literally walk there should I desire. I was so excited to check them out in hopes they were still serving their great food and I was not disappointed.

Although small, the atmosphere was quite nice. Rows of tables for two or four (mostly four) lined the walls, with three large round tables down the middle for seating for five or more. A large fish tank flanks the back wall housing some really large goldfish or Koi (or carp, not exactly sure) with a very colourful red wall.

I was pleasantly surprised to find more women working this location than the all male crew at the last location and they seemed really genuine in wanting me to understand the menu, even with their broken English I was able to understand what I may be ordering. It was nice for a change.

The menu is very extensive, with eight main sections to choose from: Drinks, Appetizers, Noodle Soup, B.B.Q. Vermicelli Dishes, Rice Dishes, House Specialties, Seafood and Chef Recommendations totaling a whopping 214 selections raging in price from a low $3.50 to $14.95 for a large Vietnamese Shrimp Hot & Sour Soup. Most of the seafood is seasonally priced.

Today we ordered,

Chef Recommendation, Hot & Sour Soup (M) $6.95 (Sup Tan Gia Ba) for two, filled with everything you’d expect… tofu, peas, pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, green onion etc. It was very good and just enough of an appetizer to warm us on this freezing day.

Along with an order of Shrimp Rolls (2 pcs) $4.95 (Goi Cuon) to start. These are the soft rolls with shrimp, lettuce and noodle filling.

For the main course we ordered B.B.Q. Pork Chop with Dried Pork Skin on Rice $6.50 (Com Suon Bi)

And Fried Beef with Spring Rolls on Vermicelli (Bun Bo Xao Xa Cha Gio) $6.95. Anything on Vermicelli is my favourite, but next time I vow to try one of the other many dishes they have.

I enjoy this restaurant for several reasons: they are fast and friendly. They are fast and fresh, with each dish piping hot as it arrives at the table. And did I mention they are fast.

I have been there at their busy times (usually after 6 or 7 to about 9 pm) and at their slow times, right at opening. No matter how busy they are, they have no issues accommodating one person or many persons and they are always friendly.

Check them out if you are in the neighbourhood 😉 or check out their Scarborough location.
