Earth Hour – Will it Make a Difference?

Posted by gottabkd on Thursday, March 27, 2008

Seems everyone is talking bout it and most people are wondering who is participating in it. Some are even wondering what they can do to get involved….

Well it’s simple really: Between 8 and 9pm on Saturday March 29th, turn all electricity off. Lights, TV, stove, radios and any non-essential electrical appliances. Leave the car parked or at home during that time and light a few candles.

Wow you may be thinking… all that for only one hour? And just what are we supposed to do for that time? Um, read a book, eat dinner, talk to your children or spouses and do it all by candle light. Remember the blackout of 1965 where Northeast America had the biggest blackout ever and in more recent times, the blackout of 2003 that left us all in the dark , well what did you do during that time? With a little proper planning, you could hold your own Earth Day Event. Seriously…

EarthHour.org is asking everyone around the world to participate by turning off the lights for just one hour.Earth Hour CMYK sm TM

First a little history from EarthHour.org:

“It started with a question: How can we inspire people to take action on climate change?
The answer: Ask the people of Sydney to turn off their lights for one hour.
On 31 March 2007, 2.2 million people and 2100 Sydney businesses turned off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. If the greenhouse reduction achieved in the Sydney CBD during Earth Hour was sustained for a year, it would be equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.
With Sydney icons like the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turning their lights off, and unique events such as weddings by candlelight, the world took notice. Inspired by the collective effort of millions of Sydneysiders, many major global cities are joining Earth Hour in 2008, turning a symbolic event into a global movement.”

And they hope that this will inspire everyone to participate in Earth Hour everyday, not just on special events.

According to the Toronto Star, the City of Toronto has signed up and is even making it into a huge event. An event that will be held at Nathan Philips Square is being headlined by Nelly Furtado… that’s right my friends, Nelly Furtado will kick of the festivities by performing a mini concert starting at 8 PM and running until 9 PM EST. She just played the Air Canada Centre and is now performing to a free audience.

Mayor David Miller, who plans to be at the Nathan Phillips Square concert, has been a vocal supporter of Earth Hour.
He has recorded a commercial (see it on www.youtube.com) that urges people to power down for one hour.
“Switch off for Earth Hour and see the world in a whole new light. The issue is real. Your actions will count. So join me in the dark,” Miller says, as the video fades to black.
Miller spokesperson Stuart Green said that while Earth Hour is a “chiefly symbolic” event, “it gets people thinking for the long term and doing the right thing.”

There is even a contest being held to win yourself one of sixty bicycles.

Thousands of businesses in a few countries around the world are participating and those are the ones that have officially signed up, which in order to participate, no sign-up is required. You can support and celebrate in your own way without making a public obligation, but should you wish to sign up, you can do so “as either an individual, organization, school or business. Once registered, you will receive information on what you can do to be more involved in Earth Hour, including useful tools and tips.”
I am proud to see my high school has officially signed up along with businesses in my current town and my home town as well 🙂

So why not join in and make a statement… get your friends and neighbours involved and if you are having a hard time trying to figure out what to do for one hour, read the articles located at TheStar.com for some inspiration and listings on what’s happening in your are for this timely event.

Me.. I think I’ll take a bubble bath by candle light… hmmm nice!
