Shopping: Toy Safety is a Concern!

Posted by gottabkd on Saturday, October 27, 2007

With the holiday buying season fast approaching, I am sure many of you have little ones you may be purchasing gifts for and often purchase toys for them all. With the latest Mattel Inc. recall on toys made in China, one must be sure these new gifts are NOT harmful to the little ones….

Here are two sites that can help you decipher what to buy BEFORE you go shopping.

The Canadian Government just launched a site called Healthy Canadians, an online searchable database of all the recalled food and childrens products.

“The new Web site combines recall information from Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency databases, and allows Canadians to search by keyword, date, product or company name, or browse through product recalls dating back to 1995. The Web site also features photographs of the recalled childrens products, to allow Canadians to more quickly recognize the products.”

They even provide a couple of extra links and phone numbers to call:
Consumers with health or safety concerns about a particular consumer product are advised to contact the Health Canada Product Safety office by phone at 1-866-662-0666 (toll-free) or email at cps_spc@hc-sc.gc.ca.

Consumers can also receive updates on consumer advisories and consumer product recalls by subscribing to Health Canada’s Consumer Product Safety News listserve at www.healthycanadians.gc.ca.

For information on food recalls and allergy alerts, consumers can call the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday). To receive information on food recalls or allergy alert notices by e-mail, or for other food safety facts, visit the CFIA web site at www.inspection.gc.ca/recalls.

Another good site is Toy Safety.org or W.A.T.C.H. Inc. World Against Toys Causing Harm Inc. which provides list of the worst toys. This list is from 2006, but is a good reference none-the-less.

You can also read this note about the recall.

So check out these two sites, print what you need and Happy Shopping…..
