New 7 Wonders of the World!

Posted by gottabkd on Wednesday, January 31, 2007

It’s the year 2007 and all but one of the ancient original wonders still exists today, the Gaza Pyramids located in Egypt. Sad but true, all of the other original wonders are gone. Kaput… no more…

So…..

This man by the name of Weber, decided to create a world event that would allow the everyone/anyone around the world to participate and eventually pick which will be named The New 7 Wonders of the world…. Cool eh? And smart. Who to decide what should become the next New 7 Wonders of the World, but the people of the world themselves using the newest technology.

The site has narrowed it all down to 21 entries, if you register you can then choose 7 of your favourites, cast your one time vote and wait till the announcement on 07*07*07. Interesting because they are picking the new 7 wonders and will announce it on the seventh day of the seventh month in the seventh year of the twenty first century. I think it’s cool. This is supposed to be a good day for a lot of things and will only come around once every

They came up with this idea years ago and now, eventually, there will be 7 new wonders of the world. If you search this on the internet, you will find controversy with one of the entries, the only one left from the originals. Apparently they do not think they should be dropped from the list, yet I wonder if they even realize they are in the top 20, let alone in the top seven. I guess they are afraid no one would vote for them. Oh well, I did.

I think this is a huge deal and I have placed a special link at the top left of this blog. It is a direct link to the site and will open in a new window. I think the ability to have the whole world participate is fantastic and even if you don’t have a computer, you can call or text your vote in.

So go ahead, register, vote and be a part of history in the making… there are 156 days left to vote…. Click the icon at the top left!

Till next time….

Can you read this? Bet you can.

Posted by gottabkd on Saturday, January 27, 2007

The mind is a powerful thing which does not need to “register” every letter of every word to fully understand what it is reading. Many speed readers know this, using this technique to help them read faster.

There is a post in the wordpress forum about pet peeves, incorrectly used grammar, spelling, and even text talk indicating a real dislike for all of the above.

But the fact of the matter is the brain is much more powerful and really does not care what letters are messed up, the brain will figure it out anyhow.

See if you too can apply this technique. At first you may want to slow down and “try to make out each word” even correct the words spelling in you head while reading, but the faster your eyes move through the paragraph, the easier it becomes. The paragraph explains the technique, if you can read it.

Try it and see for yourself.

2007 is the Year of the Pig. Actually it’s more like a boar.

Posted by gottabkd on Saturday, January 27, 2007

The Chinese New Year is just around the corner and it never coincides with the Gregorian calendar date of January 1st. It usually begins in February, the first month of the Chinese calendar. Most festivals celebrating the new year, last 15 days and is quite the celebration. The Lantern Festival usually tops it all off and is celebrated on the 15th day.

In 2007, February 18th is the date (2006 it was Feb 07) and 2007 is the Year of the Pig, or more accurately a boar. Your Chinese horoscope is very detailed and is comprised of several calendars that are laboriously combined to display your life’s destiny.

The Chinese calendar combines the Zodiac, the five elements of Chinese thought, calendrical cycles based on astronomy, and ancient Chinese religion.

It is said that to bear children in the Year of the Pig (associated with fertility and virility) is very fortunate and anyone born a Pig, will grow to be happy and honest.

The twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac are; Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Apparently each person has inner and outer animals based on other things like birth month, the lunar months, and the hour of birth. Already this is too complicated for me. Whew!

The five elements are; Metal, Wood, Fire, Water and Earth which are also used in the practice of Feng Shui.

Most city's will have a 15 day festival to coincide with this celebration, so check your local listing, or your city's website, during the month of February for events in your area.

Bikram Yoga… one hot workout!

Posted by gottabkd on Saturday, January 27, 2007

No seriously, I mean heat hot!

A new yoga studio opened up near me offering free classes during it’s grand opening. I had seen the signs for at least three weeks and wondered what Bikram Yoga was all about. I had only done Yoga as a child while visiting a somewhat eccentric aunt for the summer. She thought it would be good for me and after taking a class I thought it was for the old folks of the hippie generation. Never mind I thought, let’s try again. I also wondered what the new studio would look like considering it used to be a drop-in centre slash pool hall slash hangout joint for the under aged crowd of 20 and under.

So I went on the internet where Wikipedia describes it as this:

“Bikram Yoga (Bikram Parmar), also known as Hot Yoga, is a style of yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury and a Los Angeles, California based company[1]. Choudhury claims that his method is the only true hatha yoga practiced in the West, though this is not accepted by many other schools. Bikram yoga is done in a room heated to 105°F (40.5°C) and accompanied by specific dialogue. People of all levels, ages and body types usually practice together with a teacher acting as a guide, taking the class through the ninety-minute series.”

As I walked in, the new environment now had a wall size waterfall to the left, leather bench seating on the right and a large greeting/workspace straight in front of me. Quite an improvement to the dark and dingy pool hall that used to be here. Chris was very welcoming, personally offering to give me a tour. His excitement could hardly be contained. He explained that this was his second studio, feeling confident that this new studio would too be a great success. It was smaller than the first one located at Bayview and Sheppard, in an area know as Willowdale.

The workout room took up half of the total space and when Chris opened the door to it, the heat came pouring out. Apparently the room was only 82 degrees, hot but according to Chris, not hot enough. All I could think of was of my trip to Barbados as the humidity and heat quickly warmed my body. We toured the smallish but new locker rooms complete with fresh paint, showers, and nine lockers. I thought to myself “it’s amazing what someone can do with and idea, some paint and some drywall”. I commented to Chris that they did a real good job of transforming the place into something completely different.
